Employment opportunities in the healthcare, construction, retail and hospitality sectors, among others.

According to the Statistics Canada website, major economic sectors saw especially high increases in job vacancies. One in seven job vacancies in Canada was in the health care and social assistance sector. This sector had the largest increase in vacancies in two years, up more than 40,000 to 108,800. Vacancies grew in all sub-sectors, but especially in hospitals and residential care and nursing facilities. Nurses and psychiatric nurses had the largest increase of all occupations over the two-year period. Their average hourly wage was

C$32.50, up nearly six percent over 2019.

Construction job openings reached a record 62,600 openings. Construction trades helpers, carpenters and electricians accounted for a large share of vacancies.

Retail job openings increased to 84,300 in the latest quarter, especially in food and beverage and building materials stores, and garden equipment and supply dealers. Retail sales clerks and warehouse supervisors at store shelves, clerks, and order fillers were among the top 10 occupations with the largest increase in job openings from the second quarter of 2019 to the latest quarter.

Manufacturing posted a record number of job openings at 65,900 openings. Vacancies were spread across several sub-sectors, with the largest gains in food manufacturing and wood products manufacturing.

There was also a record number of vacancies in accommodation, hotel and food services. The number of job openings in this sector totaled 89,100. The increase was entirely in the food services and drinking places sub-sector, which were vulnerable to public health restrictions. Food counter assistants, kitchen helpers and related support occupations had a large increase in vacancies. Statistics Canada says it was the second-largest increase of any occupation over the two years. The median hourly wage for this occupation was $14.55, up more than six percent from the same quarter in 2019.

Statistics Canada's Canadian survey of business conditions suggests that more than eight percent of businesses expect to see an increase in job vacancies this quarter. Quarterly job vacancy data for the third quarter of 2021 will be available in December.
